This proud, smiling mother fox seemed to take time out of her busy day to show off her handsome son. Her smiling face is painted from a photograph I snapped of her.

This princely buck came to my home often one Fall, seeking shade under the pines and stretching lazily over cool, flat rocks. I painted him lounging as if he were on the soft cushions of a loveseat overseeing his kingdom.

They say that it’s once in a lifetime that you may see the elusive bobcat. This beautiful bobcat sat outside my window, her big eyes taking me in as I photographed her. I like to imagine her as a mother. What wisdom would she share? What stories could she tell? Come sit a while on this old chair.

This chubby, young bear sat for the longest time, scooping up ants and seeds in the soft sandy soil. I liked to imagine a child filling her boots with wild flowers, bringing out cookies, and inviting woodland friends to tea. Did they have a nice party?

My move to Colorado has proved to be an explosion of creative joy. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could look out of my front window and watch a mother bear lope lazily along with two trailing cubs, or a doe nursing her fawn, or a mother fox chasing her four kits. A herd of elk, a family of bobcat, a gang of wild turkeys, a golden eagle, a marmot, a coyote, and for a few heart stopping moments…a mountain lion. A wild parade through my yard! I don’t want them to leave.
In my collection, Wild Embrace, my paintings are an invitation for each animal to stay for just a little while. What stories would they tell?
